BECCA Is Closing. Where Does That Leave Us?
Hello everyone!
Welcome back to my blog. I hope you all are doing well.
I want to dedicate today’s blog to BECCA. I don’t know whether you’ve heard this or not but BECCA is going under. The pandemic had a huge impact on the brand and unfortunately they couldn’t recover from it. According to their website, the brand will be closing down by the end of September, 2021. You can read their announcement here.
In case you’re not familiar, BECCA is a beauty brand founded by makeup artist Rebecca Morrice Williams around 20 years ago in Perth, Australia. She officially left when the brand was acquired by Estée Lauder in 2012. You can read more about it here.
I first became aware of the brand after they collaborated with Jaclyn Hill (Beauty YouTuber) back in 2016 with the Becca x Jaclyn Hill Champagne Collection. I didn’t know who Jaclyn was at the time, however, this collaboration was so huge that it was everywhere. Everyone was talking about it. One of the products from this collection that got the most hype, and went on to become the brand’s bestseller, was the BECCA Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed Highlighter in Champagne Pop.
Let’s just say that this product single handedly established BECCA as the supreme brand when it came to highlighters. Don’t get me wrong, they have other really good stuff. It’s just that the association between the brand and this one product is really solid.
If you think of highlighters, you think of BECCA. If you think of BECCA, you think of highlighters.
I’m not sure about BECCA’s popularity prior to Champagne Pop as I don’t reside in the west but this is how I got to know about them.
Now, let's talk about BECCA in India.
At the moment BECCA is available on Nykaa. They launched roughly five to six months ago. I’m not sure whether Sephora houses the brand or not because it’s not available on the website or in my local Sephora store but I know that they did sell them at some point.
Note: the website shouldn’t be taken as a credible source for what Sephora sells or not. I’ve found brands and products on the website that aren’t available in my local Sephora and vice versa.
One thing that isn’t certain is whether the brand will stop production this year or they have already stopped and expect to completely sell the existing stock by September, 2021. Nonetheless, I will be focusing on getting as many BECCA products as possible. This is only because I’m a luxury beauty enthusiast. If you’re an average consumer then I would suggest doing your own research and then deciding what product to get based on your needs and finances. Don’t feel pressured to buy anything. These products are expensive. Yes, the brand won’t be here for long, however, there are other brands and other products. You’ll be fine.
In the last segment of this blog I’m going to do a mini review.
Details
BECCA Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed Highlighter Mini - Moonstone
Where to buy - I got it from Nykaa
MRP - ₹1500/- (I got it for ₹1495 using my reward points)
Net Weight - 2.4 g
Shades Available - Opal, Champagne Pop
Manufacturing Date - 06/20
Import Date - 10/20
Expiration Date - 12/22
I received two free samples along with my purchase (I love when a brand does that!). One card with their anti-fatigue under eye primer and their undereye brightening corrector in two shades - light to medium and medium to dark. The other was a gold makeup pouch. I haven’t tried the under eye samples so won’t comment on them. The bag is good but I wouldn’t pay for it. However, I'm happy to receive it for no charge.
Packaging - the packaging is sturdy. It’s made from good quality plastic. The compact flip opens and has a secure closure. It comes with a mirror, it’s tiny but it’s there.
Colour and Texture - I would describe Moonstone as a warm white gold. This highlighter is gold toned and not pink. It’s really flattering on my skin tone (NC 35) or light to medium skin tones. It blends in and doesn’t give an ashy appearance. Highlighters tend to look ashy when they're either too light or too dark. Despite being a powder, I'm quite impressed with the formula. It’s really smooth and blends beautifully. It has very fine specks of shimmer which aren’t chunky at all. You won’t be able to feel them between your fingers. It didn’t accentuate the texture of my skin which is a bonus. The highlighter looks good in real life, it doesn’t look too much.
How I Apply It - I used both my fingers and a brush (Real Techniques Setting Brush) to apply this product and honestly it works well with both.
Final thoughts - the product is amazing in all aspects. The shade is perfect for my skin tone. The formula is smooth and blends easily. It doesn’t look crazy in real life and adds a nice glow to the skin. I would still like to go over the highlighted areas with a dewy setting spray to make the highlighter melt into my skin but overall 5/5.
I hope you have an amazing day. Don't forget to follow and subscribe to my blog. It’s a two step process, so make sure you check your email and verify your account. Also, follow @curlylocksandthoughts on Instagram. Share your thoughts and stories in the comments down below.
